High Reliability Schools Strand  |  Learn about our Westminster approach to monitoring leading and lagging indicators to for school improvement in a competency-based system.

Marzano Academies Strand  |  Dr. Robert Marzano and Bill Zima will lead a strand dedicated to the 16 School Level Indicators that have guided the work at our own John E Flynn A Marzano Academy as well as competency-based schools across the nation. 

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Dr. Robert J. Marzano

Dr. Marzano partnered with Westminster Public Schools to open a Marzano Academy in WPS in the fall of 2018. He was an early partner in WPS's move to a Competency Based System and has been a principal advisor to WPS for over a decade.

During his 50 years in the field of education, he has worked with educators as a speaker and trainer and has authored more than 50 books including the hugely influential The New Art and Science of Teaching. He also writes and speaks about a variety of education topics including instruction, assessment, writing and implementing standards, cognition, effective leadership, school intervention and the building of High Reliability Schools.

Captain Todd Marzano U.S. Navy (retired)

Captain Todd R. Marzano was raised in Denver, Colorado and graduated from the University of Colorado with a degree in Aerospace Engineering. He was commissioned through Aviation Officer Candidate School, earned an MA in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, and completed the Navy’s Nuclear Power Training program.

Marzano has served in multiple Strike Fighter Squadrons and as the first Commanding Officer of Pre-Commissioning Unit John F. Kennedy. Marzano was deployed 7 times, graduated from TOPGUN, and landed on aircraft carriers over 800 times..Recipient of the Legion of Merit Award, Marzano will provide insight into the High Reliability methods and frameworks employed in the U.S. military to ensure consistent results.

Scott Bacon

Scott is a pioneer, thought partner, and innovator of the earliest sustained models of competency-based education (CBE) in the nation. His contributions have helped propel this transformational CBE approach to a nationwide conversation.  Scott continues to drive change in partnership with innovation networks deep in the trenches of implementation. His contribution is what Dr. Marzano refers to as “rare air,” stating that, “Scott’s forward thinking is shaping the future here in the present.” Scott is the founder of the organization Center for Competency Based Education whose initial mission began twenty years ago developing online tools to support the CBE model. He is also co-author of the upcoming book Record Keeping, Reporting, and Grading in a Competency-Based School: The Academy Model.
